catastrophy: sparkly pink d20 necklace (yes!)
This year's Acen was a con of many firsts for me. For the first time I was neither a) naked, nor b) seriously injured by a prop, and c) wearing a costume that people actually recognized, which leads us to d) got glomped by unsettling fangirl/boys

Also a first for me, I went to Soap Bubble with Sushu and Aza, on a random whim, and actually enjoyed dancing for awhile with A+S+Kat+Alex.

Other than that, I didn't do much at the con, I hung around the room with Sushu and did last minute work on the Maromi head, helped the kids find food, and took my sweet time paroozing the dealer's room with Sushu---a task which was somewhat hampered by the fact that I was constantly assailed by creepy glompers and people who wanted to take my picture (truth be told, the guy? in the fox suit was the least creepy person to suddenly pounce me). But, I did manage to get the remaining Furuba volumes to fill in the gaps in my collection and a little monkey keychain made of string for Anna. I suppose I was anticipating a greater amount of attention than I'm typically accustomed to when I cosplay, but this was truly unprecedented. But then, I'm sure it doesn't compare to the amount of fangirl action that Aza/Kenshin and Marcel/Jin got (grandstanding snog or no).

Although it was kind of pain, I'm glad I made the Maromi costume. I think it will be really useful for the club, like at the RSO Fair and things where we're trying to snag people's attention. Dunno if I'll take it to California with me yet.

As for the skits, I will abstain from another rant, and instead point to the fine examples put forward by [livejournal.com profile] summercomfort, [livejournal.com profile] walksbyherself, and [livejournal.com profile] tokyoselbstmord already.

As for amusing anecdotes, I do have two.

First, there was Jeremy and the chairs. When we were in the dealer's room Friday, I separated from Jeremy for a few brief seconds to look for Mike. In the short period of time that my back was turned, Jeremy promptly proceeded to run into what must have been the most stationary and unassuming chair in the whole damn place and injure himself. And later when we returned to the room, I left him alone by the table while I went to mess with a prop, and he ran into yet another chair by the time I looked back again. The poor boy. I guess it was a good thing that there wasn't a Parked Cars Convention going on in addition to the Bulk and Powdered Goods Convention and the prom.

Second, my first glomper. So, I'm in full Maromi-gear walking down the open-air hallway to the elevators (this was before I discovered it was easier and safer to carry the head and just put it on for photos or whatever else I needed it for) when I spy through my narrow swath of pink mesh vision a lone figure on the opposite hallway, bounding towards the elevator lobby with arms flung wide open, skipping, with blissful eyes and a warm smile like he should be romping through some meadow with the incredibly melodramatic violins towards some kind of snack bar... and then it occurs to me that I have absolutely no idea who this boy is, and that he's rapidly approaching my coordinates with no indication of slowing or stopping and that in fact he seems to be deliberately aiming for me. At which point I mutter "Oh, god!" to myself and brace for impact. *WUMP* "Gently..." as he assails me with full-on bear-hug force. Thankfully he did not come back for seconds. But honestly, with those huge soulless voids for eyes, how can people think that Maromi is all fuzzy giggles and sunshine? They should be running in the opposite direction!
The other amusing Maromi moment came when these two girls asked if I would pose for a picture with them, and one looked up and said "It's like being at Disneyworld!" only with a lot more fat, greasy men in spandex sailor suits and cat girls with "Will work for Pocky" signs. Oh, and instead of overpriced vending machines and giftshops there are yaoi booths, miles and miles of yaoi booths.
