We went by Caltrain to San Francisco and saw the sea lions at Fisherman's Wharf and walked around Chinatown.
We ate spam musubi (unexpectedly tasty!) at the Nikkei Matsuri festival and Lucy tried to eat the plastic broccoli at the Children's Discovery Museum. In Willow Glen, Lucy got some new toys and pink shoes that squeak when she walks---the most adorable sight ever! Kristen tried Pizza My Heart and found it delicious. We discovered new foods that Lucy likes, like oatmeal and black-eyed peas.
I didn't have batteries for my camera, so I don't have pictures, but I'll remember the food we ate, and playing with Lucy, and living a schedule based on naps, diaper changes, and avoiding car rides (Lucy hates riding in cars.) They left yesterday, and after I took them to the airport I went to FSH to move a carload of stuff with Sushu's help.
It was really nice to see part of my family, as last time I saw them was for Christmas. I'm sure Kristen will have plenty to confer with my sisters/mom about the State of the Cat. Kristen wants to help, but she lacks finesse when giving advice. Mentioning off-hand that my mother is worried I might need antidepressants, calling the last two years of working experience "something to overcome" on my resume, or suggesting that I look into signing up for welfare, are all rational or practical in a sense, but profoundly unhelpful. What advice she had that seemed useful, I'll take to heart, but ultimately I'm still trying to work things out my way.
And it seems that no matter how many times I try to explain how I'm planning to deal with big problems (job, housing, etc), they either don't get it or can't see a good outcome.
Perhaps I'm being stubborn, but I'm not immune to reason.
While I want to stay in CA and continue to live independently, there's limit to what I'm willing to do to achieve it. I'm not willing to live in my car or camp out in public parks, just to stay in CA, for instance.
If I can't find a job by July making a living wage (math crunches that as minimum $10/hr, assuming a 40 hour work week), then I won't be able to afford housing in the South Bay even if I can find it.
But I really do like living out here and living on my own, so I'm not going to give up either of those without a fight. If I run down the clock come July, I'll set up base back in the Midwest temporarily until I can afford to live on my own again (location negotiable), or perhaps until I go back to school.
