ACen/JAS Alumni Reunion was awesome!
This year we tried several new things that made it better than ever:
Jono, Sushu, and I traveled together
JAS alumni roomed together and in the same hotel as JAS
Jono GM'd two RPGs
We made onigiri again
We decided to show up late to Masq
Sushu and I did all our dancing during the interlude at Masq
I got the Alumni boozed up and we serenaded the JAS kids with drunken renditions of our fav anime songs
Somehow we ended up doing toasts with the JAS kids (I think I can blame that one on Kelley?)
I wanted to cosplay this year, but time and budget restrictions prevented me. Next year!
I never made it to any panels (although I got some good shots of Sushu and Jono in their Avatar cosplay, below cut), but I had enough fun having Giordano's, roleplaying, and hanging out with alumni that I'm ok with it. We still caught Masquerade, and to our delight the JAS skit won Judge's Choice!! YAY UCJAS!!! We tried to do a group karaoke at Cosplay Karaoke, but the line was so massive that they never made it to our number. So, we went over to the Hyatt and caroled in the lobby...but no one seemed to notice our delightful (if off key) shenanigans.
( what pics I got on my own camera )
I did get to hang out with my friend Mike from A^2 Saturday morning. I'm always delighted to see him (I totally pounced him on the sidewalk when I saw him Friday) but he's always horribly busy with work that people haven't yet paid him for... He was quite the gentleman, stealing an extra tray so I could have breakfast with him. (Ladies, you know you've found a quality guy when he's willing to steal buffet food for you! ^.~) We chatted until the other Alumni woke up and Mike decided it was time to go back to bed. After caroling, I found Mike wandering about in throes of boredom, so I joined him to reminisce with some con staff veterans---including Big John, a UofC alumni back from the fansubbed VHS collection era of JAS. Then, I brought Mike back to the Alumni room and we steeped him in nostalgic memories of JAS before I let him run away to catch some sleep before his early morning bus back to MI.
Sunday we stopped by Jono's mom's place. We watched the final ep of Avaar with little Aleksa and Sushu/Jono did some bending play with her (pillows for earth, blanket for water, beach ball for air, etc). Sushu and I had some girl talk with Renee about weddings, and we had just enough time for a game of Hey! That's my fish! and some tacos before we had to catch our flight. Sushu read Devil in the White City to me (serial killers should not be allowed to have Ned Flanders-style moustaches) and I let her knot up my peanut wrappers.
All in all, ACen 09 was fabulous, and when Ariel and Rachel join the ranks of JAS Alumni next year it's going to be even better. (JAS Matriach room, please?) This year I had already paid for plane ticket/reg fees before my money situation got so tight, so I bit the bullet and swapped cosplay fun for hotel money (and between food and my Gurren Langan wallscroll, I only spent like $21 at the con). Hopefully I have the money for it next year, because it's just going to get better!
